What’s Your Story? Walking Down Memory Lane

How did you get to this very moment in your life?

What specific events happened that changed your direction?

As an entrepreneur, our business reflects our personal story.

When I talk to other entrepreneurs the reason they usually come up with the idea is because something happened in their personal life and needed a particular product or service. Or they wanted to create a movement and change the way people thought about certain things.

As a person that has built many brands I see an evident trend. The most successful brands are the ones that people can relate to, connect with, and have a clear story/mission. As a business owner I used to hide behind the logos of my business. I didn’t want to embrace the idea of sharing my personal story. But as my businesses grew I realized the reason was because I became more and more open to sharing my journey as the person behind the business. More importantly, I realized that my story mattered.

When I look back on my journey now I still can’t believe how things played out just at the right time. A lot of different things could have transpired, but I believe that God had a hand in my path to where I am today. Along the road to full time entrepreneurship I had many choices and opportunities. I had the free will to choose where I wanted to work, what I wanted to do. With a lot of prayer and tough decision making, my choices brought me here to the present day.

During the end of my final quarter at FIDM I decided I wanted to start my own business. I was drowning in an ocean of final projects, tests, graduation, working at a bridal shop 35 hours a week, and dancing in my free time. I have no idea how I pulled it off, but I did. Having all those things on my plate showed me how to multitask and handle multiple projects at once. At the same time I started my first business, Daydreamer Events, a wedding and event planning company. The wedding industry showed me how to be a people person, how to be more outgoing, and was my first taste in customer service.

Post-graduation I was running my wedding planning business and was working full time for a print company. Charlie’s experience and my experience in the print industry inspired us to start our first business together, Inked Print and Graphics which later turned into CO Creative Cartel after we got married. The print industry showed me how important it is to have strong business to business relationships.

2007 was the start of the great recession and that was the start of a lot of ups and downs for my family. I was very lost during this time. Everything I had known started to turn upside down. I had different jobs on and off during the next few years to help supplement income, when my mom convinced me to get my real estate license. I was still running both my wedding planning and print businesses, but things were slowing down. This time in my life taught me about perseverance and how necessary it is to adapt to change.

In 2008, my family opened Ninong’s. Oh boy, if you knew the story of what happened before we opened in Granada Hills. It was really really hard for us, let’s just say that. It was new, it was exciting, but it also took a toll on all of us physically, mentally, and financially. We are finally starting to see the fruits of our labor and are extremely grateful that we didn’t give up. Charlie and I got engaged shortly after and 2 years later got married. Those years were an extreme transition time for us. We had so much to look forward too but there was an immense weight on our shoulders. After our wedding I worked a few contract jobs and found myself as a manager at a stationery company before I went to work at Ninong’s full time. Working as a manager showed me how to lead a team of people and set milestone goals which was extremely useful when I transitioned to Ninong’s.

2013 was when I really went full time into entrepreneurship and it was the scariest time of my life, both professionally and personally. When I first started I was the first one at work and the last one to leave. I would work 14+ hour days and come in on my 1 day off a week. Guys, I think I cried every day for almost a year. I realized as an entrepreneur you just have to do what you have to do to stay afloat. You do it because you love it and believe in it that much.

A month after I started my mom found out that she had cancer. That moment was the turning point for me and my life completely changed. Things became clearer, more real, more complicated, but also more meaningful. I knew that this was going to change ever aspect of my life and my outlook. During that time I realized that all the odd jobs that I worked helped give me the experience I needed to run my businesses successfully. I stopped crying ever day lol! I became stronger and more in tune with myself as an entrepreneur. I realized I had all the tools I needed because of my journey. My long and winding journey shaped me to the person I am today.

Today I run our cafe Ninong’s, a stationery company CO Creative Cartel, a Real Estate business, and a Youtube Channel The Good the Bad the Foodie. This is me, this is my life, and this is who I am – an entrepreneur passionate about business in every way, shape, and form.

If you’re out there this is my message for you. You are going to experience a lot of ups and downs during your time, but it’s all about how you persevere through the tough times and the grace you show during the good times. Trust me, it’s always worth it in the end.

I believe we all have a choice which path we want to take it life, I truly believe there is always a choice. It may not always be easy, everyone has something that holds them back or they struggle with. But take it from me, the journey is the most important part. Cherish the journey, learn from it. Embrace it and be proud of your story.

My New Skincare Regimen

I’ve mentioned the random desire to take care of my skin in a previous post. It’s been working really well for me in more ways than one so I thought I’d share what I currently use.

When I was growing up I never took care of my skin regularly. I’d say I would start but it never really stuck, I think mostly because I was one of the lucky ones that didn’t have acne issues. Yes I’d have a pimple here and there but no real big break outs.

Last year was really really rough for me and no matter how much I tried to be ok on the outside I was battling so much within. In fact I still struggle with it today. But one day after I came back from the Philippines I wanted to do something to take care of myself. Something small that would just help me take a tiny step toward a positive mindset. I just woke up one morning and decided that small thing I would do is take care of my skin. Random, I know.

Because of my family’s history of cancer my main concern is to use products that are as natural as possible. On top of that, something that isn’t too expensive and works with my sensitive/combination skin. After scouring the internet I decided to go with a combination of Burt’s Bees, Lush, and Neutrogena products.

In the morning I use the Burt’s Bees Brightening Daily Facial CleanserEdit, Burt’s Bees Brightening Refining TonicEdit, Imperialis moisturizer by Lush, and Neutrogena Clear Face Liquid Lotion Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30Edit. I’ve been eyeing the Imperialis moisturizer for a while and decided that could be my little splurge. It absorbs into my skin really well and feels light while still moisturizing my skin. The only thing I’m not excited about is the sunblock by Neutrogena. It just kind of feels heavy and it’s not natural, but I don’t think there is a natural sunblock. If there is an all natural sunblock I don’t know about please comment below and share with me!

In the evening I’m currently using Burts Bees Renewal Cleanser, the same toner from my morning routineEdit, and Burt’s Bees Night Cream for Sensitive SkinEdit. I love the way the redefining cleanser gently scrubs and softens my skin. The night cream does wonders too, it’s really hydrating and doesn’t irritate my skin. Thankfully none of the products I use do.

At first I started this regimen because I wanted to just maintain the “ok” skin I had, I figured it would be better to maintain good skin that try to repair it after I start to notice issues right? On top of that, I just wanted to do something small to give myself a .00000001% confidence boost. But it did so much more than that.

Creating a morning and evening routine has forced me to do a little something for myself 2x a day. It gives me a little structure, too. I made a commitment to get up earlier in the morning and get ready for bed a little earlier so that I can make time to do my skincare routine. The structure makes me feel like I have a constant during my crazy work weeks.

It’s also had a positive effect on my confidence. It hasn’t completely changed but it has helped me to see I’m worth 10 mins in the morning and the evening at the very least. I also noticed my skin feels better, my skin tone is more even, and I even get up early enough to put on a little eyeliner/mascara and fix my hair.

I feel like it was a ripple effect to start making small changes toward a positive life. Since then I started eating better and I even went to the gym this past week. Whhhhaaaaattttt?! Go me! Lol. On top of that it has also helped me with my productivity and motivation to get things done. Some friends and family have even noticed I carried myself differently.

It just goes to show that a small positive change can help the other aspects of your life. Do something that will encourage you to be better and allow it to spread into other aspects of your life!

March Goal Setting

March is creeping up on me and that means spring is almost here. There are some things that are great about spring! Some people think of spring as a fresh start (even though I think anytime is a good time to start), the weather starts to warm up a little bit, beautiful flowers start to bloom, and the leaves start to turn green again. I think the only thing I hate about the spring is my allergy problem haha.

I’ve been looking back on my 2017 goals this past week in Evernote. I revisited the goals I wrote down for myself and just let it marinade for a little while so I can evaluate things I want to work on, change, and keep doing.

  1. Health and Fitness: I need to start going to the gym consistently and continue on improving my dietary choices.
  2. Work: Ninong’s is doing well, we are continuing to grow and change. I’m planning a huge trade show for CO Creative Cartel in the summer and I need to start planning. Real estate had been busier than expected, we closed 2 transactions in the first quarter and have 3 potential clients we can possibly in the 2nd quarter. I never thought this would be something that I would ever do, especially without my mom. But God has a way of showing you what His plans are for you. 🙂 The Good the Bad the Foodie has started and we’re filming on a consistent basis. We’ve got more videos coming your way so if you haven’t subscribed to our YouTube channel yet make sure you do so you don’t skip a beat!
  3. Home: Charlie and I have been organizing little by little and tackling projects every couple weeks. Working 6 days a week (sometimes 7) makes it really hard to keep your house clean. I’ve been taking every Monday to clean and doing little by little every day after work to make it more manageable.
  4. Personal Growth: I have really bad self confidence issues and one day I woke up and decided I wanted to start taking care of my skin (more on this later). I’ve never really had any issues with my skin but I definitely didn’t want to start having problems as an adult. I’ve been doing it for a little over a month and not only has my skin felt really soft and healthy but it has also given me a little bit of confidence. Taking care of myself has helped me to treat myself with respect and has mentally given me some self worth! On top of that I found an accountability partner in my good friend and fellow entrepreneur Heather, I started up bible study with my friends again, and I plan on traveling more this year.

So this month, I plan on being more consistent with the new things I started and turn them into healthy habits. The idea of positive reinforcement has been a huge factor in my progress not just in my personal habits and confidence but also in my productivity. So I want to continue to do things that are healthy for my body and mind which will be my focus for this month.

Happy planning guys! What are you goals for the month of March?
